Cristiano Ronaldo has given his opinion on whether Lionel Messi’s World Cup triumph will end the debate on who is the greatest of all time.

Messi was at his best on Sunday as he helped Argentina get the better of defending champions France at the Lusail Stadium to finally clinch World Cup glory.

Despite having a 2-0 lead at half-time, Argentina ended up being pushed all the way as two Kylian Mbappe goals in the last 10 minutes dragged the match into extra time.

It looked like Messi had scored the winner when he netted in the 108th minute, but Mbappe had other ideas as he forced a penalty shootout with a late spot kick of his own in the 118th minute.

In the end, Messi was not to be denied as Argentina came out 4-2 winners after a tense penalty shootout which saw France miss two spot kicks.

Coming into the World Cup, many felt that if one of Messi or Ronaldo wins the tournament, they will become the undisputed GOAT.

Now, fans are adamant that Messi is untouchable after getting his hands on the elusive World Cup trophy, something that Ronaldo hasn’t been able to do with Portugal.

However, prior to his side’s shock exit in the quarter-finals against Morocco, Ronaldo has already snubbed the idea that his or anyone else’s legacy will be impacted by the World Cup.

When asked whether the 2022 tournament will decide the GOAT debate, Ronaldo said: “Even if I win the World Cup that will continue. Some people like me more, some less. It’s like in life, some like blondes, some like brunettes.

“I have always had to show what I can do year after year. I would love to win this tournament. I’m ambitious but if you tell me I won’t win any more tournaments I would still be happy given all I have won. In the history books, all other records will be there. But obviously, a World Cup on the shelf wouldn’t be bad. It would be a dream.”

Messi has now completed his World Cup journey with a stunning victory right at the end, a fairytale ending for a player that writes his own stories on the pitch.
